NIH Security

All visitors must access NIH via the NIH Gateway Center, adjacent to the Medical Center Metro station at the South Drive entrance to the NIH campus from Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue (Route 355). It combines visitor parking, non-commercial vehicle inspection, and visitor ID processing, all in one location. NIH will process all visitors in vehicles or as pedestrians.

NIH guests will be required to show one form of identification (a government-issued photo ID-driver's license, passport, green card, etc.) and to state the purpose of their visit. In preparation for access to NIH's campus, all meeting attendees (even those who have been to NIH before) are encouraged to review the detailed Campus Access and Security requirements.

NIH Visitor Information

NIH visitors can find detailed information on NIH’s Visitor Information page, including directions, maps and public transportation information by reviewing NIH's Getting to NIH page for driving directions and information about public transportation.

Metro

William H. Natcher Building (Building 45) is a short walk from the Medical Center Metro (subway) stop on the NIH campus. Attendees are encouraged to use Metro, because parking is limited on NIH’s campus. Metro provides trip planning tools(including schedules and maps), and additional public transportation information is available from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority website.

Parking

Visitor parking is extremely difficult to find at NIH, so attendees are encouraged to take public transportation. There is a Metro station on the NIH campus with shuttle bus service to the main buildings.

Short-term, metered parking and long-term, attendant-controlled parking are available to visitors at a cost of $2 per hour for the first three hours or $12 per day. View the visitor parking map.

The Gateway visitor complex includes MLP-11, a 342-space, multi-level underground parking garage. This visitor-only lot is the primary visitor parking for the NIH main campus. We strongly encourage all visitors to park in this garage, as there will be limited visitor parking on campus. Vehicles parking in MLP-11 are outside of the perimeter security and will not go through vehicle inspection, reducing the amount of time it takes to get on campus. Visitors parking in MLP-11 should proceed to the Gateway Center to get a visitor badge and either walk or take a shuttle bus to their destination.

NIH Shuttle Buses

Once on the NIH campus, visitors can take the free NIH campus shuttle bus to get to the William H. Natcher Building (Building 45), which is within walking distance from the NIH Gateway Center. View the NIH campus shuttle schedule

Walk

If you choose to walk, it is approximately a 5-minute walk from the NIH Gateway Center. View a printable NIH campus map.
